Is the Biewer the right breed for you?

The Biewer is not the breed for everyone. Certain considerations should be made before you decide to adopt.  Biewers have high grooming needs, especially when kept in full coat and must be raised indoors. They are not frail, but as companion dogs, require a great deal of attention. The correct diet for coat development and skin care must be considered. They are very intelligent and should learn proper obedience training and socialization to be an enjoyable member of your home. As with any toy breed, Biewer puppies should not be left unsupervised with small children.

While the Biewer is more expensive than the Standard Yorkshire Terrier, there is good reason. The Yorkshire has been around for years and has many generations of established bloodlines. They have already paved their way in America with great success. The Biewer is still rare and relatively new to the US.  Bloodlines are in the process of being developed and require great care to make sure the "right" dogs are selected for breeding. Not every dog that is imported or bought in the US will be selected for breeding. What once was a promising Biewer puppy, given more time, might not be bred due to the development of a bad bite, ear set, top line, or other genetic issues. The temperament might not be desirable or the puppy may not make weight for breeding. Ethical breeders take all of these things into consideration. With strict breeding practices, our lines will improve and we will be able to provide healthy, happy puppies for years to come.

Once you decide the Biewer is the right breed for you, select a breeder who stands behind her pups. Ask questions and be selective.  Anyone can reproduce dogs, but it takes a special person to put the betterment of the breed before their own need for dollar signs.  A reputable breeder will spend a great deal of time and money to insure
your pup has a healthy, happy start in your family.
